Review of the ANZCA clinical teacher development and support program

To ensure that ANZCA trainees are experiencing the highest quality teaching and learning opportunities and achieving optimal clinical competence, the College must provide contemporary development and support initiatives for Fellows involved in clinical teaching.
In parallel with the ANZCA training program curriculum review, the College is reviewing and redesigning the way in which it provides support and training for those delivering clinical teaching to trainees.
Clinical Teacher Development Working Group
The ANZCA Council has convened the Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) to ensure that a relevant agenda, timeline and project framework is set for the review and that a suitable clinical teacher development and support program is designed and implemented.
Roles and principles
The Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) acts as a steering group for the review and re-design process to:
- Set the agenda, timeline and project framework for the clinical teacher development and support program review.
- Provide guidance on direction of the clinical teacher development and support program review process.
- Provide guidance on the methodological approaches to be used during the review process.
- Advise on methods to access key groups for participation in the review process.
- Oversee the analysis process from the review.
- Convene specialist reference groups to assist with interpretation of review.
- Oversee re-design of the clinical teacher development and support program to reflect the outcomes of the review.
- Convene specialist reference groups to oversee re-design of teacher development and support components.
- Oversee the piloting and implementation of the re-designed clinical teacher development and support program.
The principles are that:
- The working group should be of a workable size (12-15 members).
- The working group should be a primarily internal working group.
- The working group will meet primarily via teleconference.
- The working group will contain members with the required expertise for steering the review, design and implementation process.
- The working group will contain members covering various aspects of experience with clinical teaching within the FANZCA curriculum.
- The working group will contain members covering various stake-holder perspectives.
- On completion of the initial implementation (that is, after review, re-design and piloting) the working group will be disbanded.

Meetings and progress
Meeting - Wednesday August 25, 2010
On Wednesday, August 25 the Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) met at ANZCA House for a one day meeting. The aims of this meeting were to commence the review of the Supervisor of Training (SOT) Support Kit and develop content for future Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA) teacher training.
The CTDWG worked to develop essential principles to guide the development, training and support for SOTs.The CTDWG made recommendations to refine the content, structure and accessibility of the current SOT Support Kit. Continued work will occur in this area. Secondly, the CTDWG developed relevant case studies, examples of WBA tools and feedback plans to be used for future teacher training. The outcomes of day were integral to the continued support and training for ANZCA teachers and included:
- The development of essential principles to guide the development, training and support for SOTs
- Identification of essential information to enable an SOT to fulfill their role effectively
- Development of case studies and WBA exemplars to used for future teacher training.
Meeting - Thursday April 15, 2010
The first meeting of the Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) for 2010 was held as an interactive webinar. The webinar provided the CTDWG and ANZCA's Education Development Unit with a practical opportunity to review this type of technology in preparation for future online teacher training and support activities.
The working group participated enthusiastically in the Cisco WebEx webinar and had a chance to collaboratively review online documents, participate in an online forum and discuss specific areas of teacher training.
The working group reviewed the ANZCA Curriculum Review Submissions Summary - Teacher Training and discussed the implications for the continued review of teacher training and support initiatives.

Meeting - Friday December 4, 2009
The Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) met via teleconference and examined the results of the ANZCA Curriculum Review Survey. The survey results were reviewed in detail on a question by question basis. Members used their expertise to analyse and interpret the data provided, taking into account the implications for the continued review of clinical teacher training and support activities.
Outcomes of analysis of ANZCA curriculum survey results:
-
Overall the CTDWG found no unexpected areas or survey results.
-
The CTDWG agreed with the data generated from the curriculum review survey.
-
The data generated from the ANZCA teacher training and support area supports the introduction of a core and options approach to teacher training.
-
Both the qualitative and quantitative data is in alignment with the future development work of the working group.
The survey results are available here www.anzca.edu.au/edu/projects/curriculum-review/survey.
Meeting - Wednesday August 26, 2009
The second face-to-face meeting of the ANZCA Clinical Teacher Development Working Group (CTDWG) was held at ANZCA House and spent the day considering the curriculum review submissions. The workshop began with a validation exercise which resulted in the review and refinement of the principles for development, training and support activities. A large portion of the workshop focused upon the identification and prioritisation of content for future program development. In addition, the working group explored issues faced by ANZCA formal positions of responsibility and developed some draft strategies to deal with such issues.
The outcomes of the day were integral to the development of the ANZCA teacher course and included:
- The review and refinement of the CTDWG principles for clinical teacher development and support activities.
- The development of content and topics that will form the basis of the ANZCA Teacher Course - Foundation Level.
- The development and prioritization of a suite of topic options that will form the basis of the ANZCA Teacher Course - Advanced Level.
- The identification of issues faced by individuals holding an ANZCA formal position of responsibility and the development of suggested strategies to deal with such issues.

Underlying principles developed by the Clinical Teacher Development Working Group
In the context of an increasing number of ANZCA trainees, the clinical development, training and support activities should:
- Be available in multiple delivery modes and accessible to all ANZCA trainees and Fellows.
- Be aligned with the ANZCA training program.
- Be recognised and resourced as a key responsibility of the College and provided on an ongoing basis.
- Include core training for all clinical teachers with options for a more tailored approach to meet the needs of those who progress to increased educational responsibilities (for example, for educational leadership, scholarship, teaching and/or management).
- Adopt an inclusive approach to recognition of prior learning in terms of teacher training activity provided in other contexts and by other providers, and establish clear articulation pathways for progression to other relevant programs/courses if so desired.
- Be acknowledged and recognised by the College within continuing professional development (CPD) frameworks and via other appropriate mechanisms.
- Reflect adult learning principles ensuring that initiatives are relevant to the interest and responsibility level of the clinical teacher.
- Include active lobbying and advocacy for the importance of clinical teaching, on behalf of clinical teachers to funding, regulatory and health policy agencies.
- Be continually reviewed to ensure ongoing improvement in quality, effectiveness and accountability to the College, trainees, the anaesthetic profession, patients and the wider community.
