Council roles

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) is governed by the ANZCA Council, which sets the direction of the College and ensures that its objectives are being achieved. The council reviews and approves the annual strategic plan and the annual budget, and develops and monitors key performance indicators and other benchmarks.

The Council Charter, which you can download from here, describes the purpose, functions and workings of the Council.

The council can delegate responsibilities to the Executive Committee, other committees and management, but remains accountable for the actions of its delegates. Click here to read more about ANZCA's committees. ANZCA’s national and regional committees also play a role in implementing the directives of the council.

  • Setting strategy.

  • Reviewing and approving the annual budget.

  • Managing risk.

  • Cultivating and maintaining the highest principles and standards of practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.

  • Promoting the science and practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.

  • Monitoring the performance of the College against its financial benchmarks and strategic objectives.

The council is assisted in achieving its objectives by the Board of the Faculty of Pain Medicine and several committees. College staff provide administrative, technical and management support, together with professional advice, to members of council and the various boards and committees.

The College is represented on major national and state organisations, committees and boards by Fellows of the College. Click here to see ANZCA's representatives on external organisations.
