Professor Barry Baker
Barry Baker became a Director of Professional Affairs (DPA) for ANZCA
in July 2006. He had previously served on the College board and Council
from 1980 to 1992, including three years as Dean of the Faculty of
Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FARACS)
between 1987 and 1990, worked as an examiner for the primary, final and
final intensive care examinations from 1975 to 1992, and was inaugural
chair of the intensive care section of FARACS from 1975 to 1977, which
later became the Faculty of Intensive Care, ANZCA. In 1994, Barry was
awarded the ANZCA Orton Medal, and in 1996 was appointed Douglas Joseph
Professor for ANZCA. From 1986 to 1990 he served on the Royal
Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) Council as FARACS representative,
and was admitted to the RACS Court of Honour in 1993. Since 1975 he has
been on the editorial board of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists’
journal, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, with a period as acting chief
editor during 2002 and 2003. In 2006 he was awarded the Ben Barry
Medal. Barry graduated MBBS from the University of Queensland in 1963
and doctor of philosophy from Magdalen College in the University of
Oxford in 1971. He was reader in anaesthesia, University of Queensland
1972 to 1975, foundation Professor of Anaesthesia and of Intensive
Care, University of Otago 1975 to 1992, and Nuffield Professor of
Anaesthetics, University of Sydney 1992 to 2005. He has more than 200
publications in the academic and scientific literature on anaesthetic,
physiological and historical topics.
