Structure and Governance
The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) is governed by the Council. The Articles of Association provide that “the powers, functions and management of the College shall be vested in the Council who shall have the general direction and control of the affairs of the College”.
The Council can delegate responsibilities to the Executive Committee, other committees and management, but remains accountable for the actions of its delegates. National and Regional committees also play a major role in implementing the directives of Council.
Council undertakes numerous tasks in meeting the Objects of the College as set out in the Memorandum of Association and its stated mission: To serve the community by fostering safety and quality patient care in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.
The College is also represented on several major national and state-level organisations, committees and boards by Fellows of the College who acts as representatives of these external organisations.
Some of Council's major activities include:
- Setting strategy
- Reviewing and approving the annual budget
- Managing risk
- Cultivating and maintaining the highest principles and standards of practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine
- Promoting the science and practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine
- Monitoring the performance of the College against its financial benchmarks and strategic objectives
It is helped in achieving its objectives by the Board of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, the Board of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and several strategically aligned committees. College staff support the workings of these bodies, and provide administrative, technical and management support, together with professional advice, to members of Council and the various Boards and committees.
