ANAESTHESIA AND VENTRICULAR ASSIST DEVICES
Chris Cokis
Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, WA
Ventricular assist devices (VAD) are mechanical pumps that support the circulation when the ventricles have failed. They may be used as a short-term support device or long-term-as definitive therapy for heart failure.
The epidemiology of heart failure is briefly discussed and the role of VADs in the future reviewed.
The physiological principles of VAD insertion and function, the role of echocardiography and the common devices used in Australia will be described.
Finally, the pathophysiology during specific cases will be presented in more detail to illustrate the difficulties involved in device insertion and maintenance.
