PATIENT EXPERIENCES OF CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

This is not a talk about a scientific study. The evidence is entirely anecdotal. This is my story, my journey from a hard-working anaesthetist & sports nut to a sufferer of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). This is about my experiences & frustrations over the last two years.

I will take you on a journey from the injuries that culminated in the development of CRPS, the clinical features consistent with the diagnosis, the treatments offered to me, the disappointment of treatment failures & complications, the limitations of drugs & their side-effects & the confusion confronting me when disparate diagnoses & treatment options have been presented to me.

Along the way I will try to link my experiences with those reported in the literature.

As my story unfolds it will become apparent that, as yet, there is no happy ending. My career has been dealt a savage blow, my sporting & musical pursuits have been destroyed & my energy & stamina have been decimated. Yet, I will not give in. I have discovered an inner strength that had been previously untested & my trust in family & friends has been cemented.

I hope that my story will encourage greater resolve to unravel the puzzle that is CRPS. With greater understanding of this perplexing disease a more structured treatment program may then evolve, much to the relief of afflicted patients.
