New drug
A new drug has just been approved for use in Australia. SITAGLIPTIN (Januvia) is an oral drug for type 2 Diabetes mellitus. It is a new class of drug, a dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP-4) inhibitor. Sitagliptin is an 'incretin enhancer' that increases the levels of active incretin by inhibiting their metabolism by DPP-4, thus prolonging their effect in stimulating insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion.

QA - so you think you’re a good anaesthetist?

Natalie Smith

The Wollongong Hospital, Wollongong, NSW, Australia

How do you know if you’re a good anaesthetist?  Who decides this?  And how often?  Ultimately, once you’ve emerged from the rigors of the ANZCA training process to be a fully fledged practising specialist anaesthetist the only person who can really monitor this is yourself.

The ability to examine and reflect on one’s own practice is one aspect of being a professional, as is the desire that we should always be striving to improve the way we work.  Practical suggestions for how you can actually do this in your day to day work will be discussed in detail, ranging from informal to formal, and covering all types of work practices.
