This seminar will be of considerable value to anyone with an interest in medical education, including trainee and specialist anaesthetists, supervisors, and ANZCA staff. The concept behind the ANZCA Education Seminars is to provide a forum for staff at ANZCA to discuss areas of educational development or innovation that may be outside their immediate area. The primary focus is therefore on keeping abreast of educational trends which may be outside the usual realm of experience at ANZCA. External participants are welcome. |

Synopsis
The informal learning that occurs in the workplace is central to the training and ongoing development of the medical workforce. Much of the literature on the role of the supervisor/teacher focuses on the desirable attributes that clinical teachers should embody rather than on the interactions that occur between learner, teacher/supervisor and workplace.
The research reported here is part of a qualitative research study that explored the on-the-job learning experiences of interns. Analysis of the interns’ experiences revealed variations in the way interns perceived the approach of registrars to the intern-supervisor role. These variations resulted in different learning experiences for the intern.
About the speaker
Joan has a long career as an educator starting as a infant school teacher, teaching at every level, from prep to post-graduate before becoming involved in researching teaching and learning in Higher Education. In 1999 she undertook a research project to examine the hospital as a learning environment for junior doctors. Captured by medical education she became the first Medical Education Officer with the Postgraduate Medical Education Council of Victoria (PMCV) for five years. She was a member of the research team conducting the Australian Medical Education Study for the Commonwealth Government. She has been researching the on-the-job learning experience of interns as part of a PhD program. Her research explores on-the-job learning from the interns’ perspective using a qualitative research methodology. She brings to this task her experience in research exploring leadership in academic departments, the scholarship of teaching, the practice of group work, the development of youth affairs policy and more recently the educational knowledge required for clinical skills teaching. Much of Joan’s own learning has been done on-the-job. Whilst education has always been her focus she has had to learn to apply her educational knowledge to many different settings and contexts. The completion of a PhD is an opportunity to formalize the learning of many years of practical experience.
