Presented by Professor Roger Gabb

Time: 12:30 – 13:30 pm
30-40 min presentation followed by 20-30 min discussion
Venue: Auditorium, ANZCA House

Synopsis
For most of us, Problem-based Learning (PBL) is built around small groups of learners that meet face-to-face. What role can online technology play in supporting learning in so-called 'blended' PBL? Is it possible to have effective PBL programs in which learners only interact online? Examples will be drawn from PBL programs in the health sciences, education, engineering and other disciplines.
About the speaker
Professor Roger Gabb is a Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science at Victoria University, Melbourne. His main focus at this time is PBL in engineering. He designed and taught a postgraduate PBL program in tertiary education. He formerly led both the Post-compulsory Education Centre and the Centre for Educational Development and Support at Victoria University. Before that he was the Director of Education at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for ten years and is a Fellow (ad eundum) of the College. He has qualifications in veterinary science, reproductive physiology, public health and education. His current research interests are in PBL in engineering, work-based learning, cross-sectoral curriculum, academic advising and academic development.

This seminar will of considerable value to anyone with an interest in medical education, including trainee and specialist anaesthetists, supervisors, and ANZCA staff. The concept behind the ANZCA Education Seminars is to provide a forum for staff at ANZCA to discuss areas of educational development or innovation that may be outside their immediate area. The primary focus is therefore on keeping abreast of educational trends which may be outside the usual realm of experience at ANZCA.
