ANZCA Trials Group

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists has a strong commitment to improving the evidence base of anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, pain medicine and the emerging specialty of perioperative medicine. Research into perioperative outcomes is an important priority aimed at improving the quality and safety of anaesthesia care.

In response to this commitment, the College formed the ANZCA Trials Group in 2005, a collaboration of accomplished clinical researchers.

In late 2009, the ANZCA Trials Group implemented its co-location to Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DEPM) after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the College and the University.

The primary goal of the Trials Group is to improve the evidence base of anaesthesia by developing and conducting high quality, multicentre randomised controlled trials and related research. Members of the ANZCA Trials Group are highly skilled in the theory and practice of research methodology and have a record of success in the coordination, conduct and management large multicentre randomised controlled trials (including the MASTER, B-AWARE, ENIGMA-II, and ATACAS trials).

The ANZCA Trials Group also provides research infrastructure support for Fellows and trainees of the College for survey research purposes and administers the Pilot Grant Scheme. The Trials Group has also developed a business case for the employment of anaesthesia research staff.
