Apply for a sponsored place at the ANZCA ASM

Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, New Zealand Māori and Pacific Islander medical students and junior doctors living in Australia or New Zealand are invited to apply for one of three complimentary registrations to the ANZCA annual scientific meeting (ASM).


The sponsorship is designed to foster interest in anaesthesia and pain medicine among Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, New Zealand Māori and Pacific Islander medical students and junior doctors, by providing complimentary registration at the ANZCA annual scientific meeting (ASM) inclusive of:
  • Attendance to Congress sessions from May 07 to May 11, 2018.
  • Accommodation at a nearby hotel.
  • Reimbursement of travel expenses.
  • Lunch, morning and afternoon teas for the duration of the conference.
  • Welcome reception and College Ceremony.
  • Opportunity to meet senior College staff and Indigenous Health Committee members.


The scholarship is designed to foster training in anaesthesia and/or pain medicine for interested Australian and New Zealand Indigenous medical students and junior doctors, through providing a stimulating learning opportunity, and facilitating communication between potential trainees and college trainees and fellows. The sponsorship will provide an opportunity for the recipient to improve knowledge, skills and attributes across the following roles in anaesthesia and/or pain medicine:
  • Medical expert.
  • Communicator.
  • Collaborator.
  • Manager.
  • Health advocate.
  • Scholar and teacher.
  • Professional



Applicants are required to satisfy the following criteria:
  1. Current enrolment in an accredited medical school or evidence of a position as a junior doctor in Australia or New Zealand.
  2. Identification as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori or Pacific Islander.
  3. Interest in specialising in anaesthesia and/or pain medicine.
  4. Ability to attend the relevant conference in the calendar year for which the sponsorship is offered.

Application process

Applicants should complete the application form (editable PDF) as well as an updated CV, any relevant academic qualifications, and evidence of current medical school enrolment or work placement.

Applications will be assessed by the ANZCA Indigenous Health Committee (IHC) and rated on merit consistent with the eligibility criteria outlined above. A decision will be made by the IHC and notified to the ANZCA Council. Not all available scholarships must be awarded and this is at the discretion of the IHC.

Applications must include all information requested and be received at ANZCA House, 630 St Kilda Road, Melbourne 3004, Victoria, Australia, or emailed to by Monday, March 12 2018. No late applications will be considered.


  • The name and photo of the recipients of the scholarship may be published, via the ANZCA website, Social Media, Bulletin and E-Newsletter.
  • The recipient will be required to supply a brief (<500 words) report to the ANZCA within one month of their ASM attendance, reflecting on their experiences attending the conference.
  • The holder of the scholarship must comply with the terms described in these guidelines. The scholarship may be withdrawn if these terms are not satisfied.
