Continuing Education Activities
ANZCA ASM Adelaide 2006
The theme for this SIG session was “Not all patients are the same”. Prof Michael Paech presented on Acute Pain Management in the pregnant and lactating patient, Dr Ted Murphy on patients with hepatic or renal impairment and Dr Lindy Roberts on pain management in the opioid tolerant patient. As a pilot project, these lectures were recorded and are now available to be downloaded from the ANZCA website as combined slide and audio presentations at: http://www.anzca.edu.au/ceqa/sig_general/acutpain/lectures.htm The file sizes are 7-18MB. It is hoped that this initiative will serve as a refresher for delegates and facilitate the sharing of CME with fellows unable to attend the conference or session and may be repeated at future SIG sessions.
ASA Perth October 2007
The SIG will be holding a session on complications and safety of Acute Pain Service modalities, specifically PCA, where problems have been encountered with unauthorised access to supposedly secured drugs; epidurals and finally COX-2 inhibitors. The AGM will be held in association with this meeting
NZAEC ASM Auckland November 7-10 2007
Henry McQuay, professor of pain management at Oxford is the invited speaker for this meeting and there will be an acute pain session exploring the value of combination analgesic therapy: Is it focussed multimodal therapy or optimistic polypharmacy? The Chair will be supporting this session but as we are already holding one SIG session it is likely that this will be on an informal basis.
Future meetings
In view of the extensive coverage of acute pain matters in recent anaesthetic conference programmes, the SIG has decided that for the time being we will not be holding stand alone meetings but will support existing meetings by holding sessions within these programmes.
Issues Arising
National Prescribing Study NPS.
Concerns have been raised about this study, especially the varying format in different States. While the SIG is willing to co-operate with the project, especially the educational component, we are not able to endorse the methodology.
Other matters
APS database.
Dr Jane Trinca and Juliette Mullumby have established a database of Acute Pain Services throughout Australia and NZ on behalf of the SIG.
ACECC
The SIG was represented by the chair at the ACECC meetings in association with the ANZCA in Adelaide and ASA in Coolum
