About the FPM

The Faculty of Pain Medicine is a Faculty of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The Faculty, which formed in1998, is the first multidisciplinary medical academy in the world to be devoted to education and training in Pain Medicine.

The Faculty arose out of collaboration between the five Participating Bodies: the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of  Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) of the RACP. Although the Faculty is part of ANZCA, it is unique in that its Fellowship and representation at all levels remain multidisciplinary.

The history of the Faculty's development began in the early 1990s.

The Faculty is administered by a Board and Committees.  Its headquarters and staff are located at ANZCA House in Melbourne. A Regional Committee has been established in Queensland.

The Faculty has established a number of Awards, Prizes and Lectures.

At the end of 2007 there were 232 active and retired Fellows of the Faculty. Eighty per cent of these Fellows were male, 20% were female. There were 61 Trainees in various stages of training.
