Prof BruneKay Brune

Kay Brune is a Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Doerenkamp-Professor for Innovations in Animal and Consumer Protection at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of Erlangen, Germany. His main clinical and experimental research topics include the treatment of pain and inflammation with drugs, cyclooxygenases, cytokines, detection of unwanted drug effects, and pharmacokinetics of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Josef Zacher

Josef Zacher is currently the Chief Surgeon of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Rheumatology and in addition the medical director at HELIOS Klinikum Berlin Buch, Germany. He has authored or co-authored approximately 150 scientific papers and has given over 600 oral presentations.  Professor Zacher’s clinical and scientific interests include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, endoprostheses (development of new designs and prospective studies) hand surgery and cartilage research.

Dan Carr

Daniel B Carr, MD, is CEO/CMO of Javelin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Saltonstall Professor of Pain Research in the Departments of Anesthesia and Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston. Professor Carr is known internationally for his contributions to pain research, evidence-based pain medicine, and to the social and political aspects of pain relief.

Maree Smith

Professor Smith is Executive Director of the Centre for Integrated Preclinical Drug Development (CIPDD) and Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Queensland (UQ). At the CIPDD, Professor Smith’s research is directed at bringing innovation into the drug development toolkit i.e. bringing innovation into drug development methods in a bid to make them more efficient, cost-effective and predictive as a means of improving productivity in the development of new pharmaceuticals for human use. In the past two decades, Professor Smith and her team have undertaken considerable research in the field of pain pharmacology with a view to improving patient outcomes. Professor Smith has successfully supervised numerous PhD and Honours students to completion and she is currently supervising four PhD students and three Honours students. In 2003, Prof Smith was awarded a “Trailblazer Challenge” award by UniQuest, and in 2006 she received an “Honourable Mention” for the Biotechnology Star Award at the Inaugural Women in Biotech Awards.

Malcolm Dobbin

Malcolm Dobbin is a Public Health Physician working as the Senior Medical Advisor on Alcohol and Drugs to the Mental Health and Drugs Division of the Victorian Department of Human Services. He has completed postgraduate research in preventive medicine (Aboriginal child health and nutrition), and has a background in emergency medicine, general practice, drug and alcohol treatment, public health, and Aboriginal community controlled health services in inner city and remote area practices. Dr Dobbin’s areas of interest include addressing the misuse of pharmaceutical drugs (prescription and over-the-counter), engagement of general practitioners in the identification and management of alcohol and other drug problems in their practice, and prevention of methadone-related deaths.
