A post graduate research qualification relative to pain medicine eg PhD or other Doctorate desirable.
The
MPC is located on the fourth floor of the Dr James Mayne Building with
dedicated inpatient accommodation of eight beds, consulting rooms, procedure
area and recovery facilities, an education area, staff offices and, shared with
the Burns Unit, specific areas for on-site physiotherapy and occupational
therapy. There are twenty-two outpatient
clinics each week and 3 dedicated procedure sessions with the facility for
additional “urgent” interventions.
The
medical staff of the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre includes consultants in Pain
Medicine who are already registered specialists in anaesthetics, psychiatry
rehabilitation medicine or addiction medicine, registrars in pain medicine,
psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine and a house officer. The unit is accredited by the Faculty of Pain
Medicine for five years and has four training posts. The nursing staff are led by a Clinical Nurse
Consultant, supported by registered nurses in outpatients, the ward, the
procedure room and recovery area. The Allied Health team comprises
psychologists, occupational therapist, physiotherapists, a rehabilitation counselor, dietitian and diversional therapist. All groups have the support of the
administration staff.
There
are two Pain Management Programmes to assist patients in developing strategies
to manage pain without resorting to medication.
Both programmes involve one to one assessment and group discussions with
major input from occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists emphasising
the balance between physical activity, relaxation training and the use of
leisure time.
PACE (Physical Activity and Cognitive Exercise) for Persistent Pain is a 2-week programme available to inpatients and outpatients.
PEP (Pain Education Programme) provides for those patients who find it more convenient to attend for a full day once a week for eight weeks.

Pain Medicine Physician (sessional) at Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management
Applications are sought from appropriately qualified Medical Practitioners for this VMO position at the Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management. This position will enable you to manage clients with chronic pain in the setting of an interdisciplinary team consisting of pain medicine specialists, physiotherapists, nurses and psychologists. The unit is accredited for pain medicine training.
You will be expected to be involved in multidisciplinary assessment and management of patients with persistent pain
Hours are available for three- to four
sessions per week or three or four days per fortnight.

Applications for Specialist Training in Pain Medicine
Applications are invited for positions in the Victorian Pain
Medicine Training Program commencing February 2009.
Up to five, six month rotations may be available across Melbourne. The accredited training units include the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Geelong Hospital, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management at St Vincent’s Hospital and Bayside Pain Service: Caulfield Pain management & Research Centre & Alfred Anaesthesia.
Terms and conditions of service applicable to the Victorian Government’s Teaching Hospital Award will apply.
Applicants can be from any primary specialty approved by the Faculty and include anaesthesia, rehabilitation medicine, surgery, medicine and psychiatry.
Applicants must be registered with the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria, submit a current Curriculum Vitae including referees and be willing to undergo employment checks.
The positions will involve training in acute, persistent and chronic pain and include training in interventional pain techniques, rehabilitation allied health based pain programs, cancer pain and palliative medicine. All age ranges will be covered.
