Welcome to the May issue of Synapse.
Following the Annual General Meeting of the Faculty of Pain Medicine on 4 May 2008, the new Board met.
We have implemented a new Board structure. The Board has the mandate for training and accreditation of trainees but also ongoing accreditation of Fellows. Recognising the Faculty’s responsibility to our Fellows, we have formed four portfolios with one Board member being the Chair:

- Training Affairs – Brendan Moore
- Fellowship Affairs – David Jones
- Resources – Leigh Atkinson
Dr Roger Goucke stepped down as Dean of the Faculty following his two year tenure. Roger will remain committed to the ongoing development of the Faculty, and is staying on the Board. The input that Roger has given to the Faculty has been enormous. Thank you Roger!

Naming of the Royal Brisbane Hospital Pain Clinic

On the 28 April 2008, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital multidisciplinary pain clinic was renamed the "Professor Tess Cramond Multidisplinary Pain Clinic" with a ceremony at Government House in Brisbane. The Faculty congratulates Professor Cramond on this well deserved recognition of her significant contribution to Pain Medicine.

Education and Training
Patient Education Pamphlets
A Patient Education Pamphet on Facet Joint Injections and Medial Branch Blocks was accepted for promulgation through the Faculty Website in .pdf format. The Faculty plans to develop a number of these documents for use by Fellows in the informed consent process and to provide information for patients.
Victorian Medical Specialist Training Forum
A Forum to begin to plan the development of an integrated and sustainable medical specialist training system for Victoria into the future across a range of public, private and community settings was convened by the Victorian Department of Human Services on 8 May. The Faculty was represented by Dr Malcolm Hogg.

Refresher Course Day
The
Faculty's Annual Refresher Course Day at the Australian National
Maritime Museum on 2 May 2008 was a great success with a record number
of delegates. Over 190 registrants enjoyed the program which focused
on Pain and Opioids, put together by Charles Brooker.
The opening session started with the 2008 FPM Foundation Visitor, Professor Quinn Hogan, and the New South Wales Visitor (Pain Medicine) Professor Linda Watkins.

Annual Dinner

The Faculty's Annual Dinner was held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and attendees were given the opportunity to view the Archibald Prize including the painting of the late Heath Ledger by Melbourne artist Vincent Fantauzzo, which won the Peoples Choice category. The Dinner Speaker, Mr Jethro Lyne, gave a very entertaining and interesting presentation on medieval art.
Dr Penny Briscoe presented Dr Roger Goucke with a World Atlas and Shorter Oxford English Dictionary in appreciation of his hard work during his term as Dean.

Scientific Program
The Faculty's ASM program was held on Saturday 3 May 2008 and Sunday 4 May 2008 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and was well attended. Our thanks go to Dr Charles Brooker, FPM Scientific Convenor for his coordination of this strong pain program and to the local and international speakers for their contributions.

Trainee Lunch
The Faculty invited all Pain Medicine trainees registered for the ASM to attend a buffet lunch during the ASM with the aim of providing an opportunity for FPM Trainees to get together. New Fellow and 2006 Barbara Walker Prize Winner, Dr Mark Schutze gave a presentation on "How to Survive your Pain Medicine Training"and encouraged the group to form an email discussion group.
The Dean (Dr Roger Goucke), Supervisor of SoTs (Dr Tim Semple) and the Executive Officer (Helen Morris) also attended to respond to questions about the training program. It has been agreed to incorporate a trainee lunch at future ASMs.

Dean's Prize/Free Papers Prize Session
The Faculty's Free Papers session was held on Sunday 4 May. A
number of abstracts were submitted for the Dean’s Prize and Faculty
Free Papers session. Winners were announced at the Faculty AGM. Congratulations go to:
Paul Wrigley (NSW): Winner of the Dean's Prize for 2008 for his presentation "Somatosensory cortical reorganisation associated with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury"
Allyson Browne (WA): Winner of the Inaugural Best Free Paper Award 2008 for her presentation "A prospective investigation of the prevalence of persistent pain following traumatic injury".

Victorian Pain Management Group (VPMG)
The Faculty of Pain Medicine in conjunction with the Victorian Pain Management Group, held an educational evening at ANZCA House on 8 May. The meeting was supported by Orphan Australia. The guest speaker, Dr Robert Blackshear, MD, President, CEO and Founder, White River Anesthesia Associates, Inc., Branson, Missouri, USA spoke on “Early Clinical Experience with a new Epidural Analgesic: Depodur in the Postoperative Setting”.
Anyone interested in helping to plan future FPM/VPMG meetings is asked to contact the Faculty Office. This is not an onerous task but we would be grateful for help.

Professional
Faculty Regulations
At the 1 May Board Meeting, the Board finalised a revision of the Administrative Instructions, now to be known as Regulations.
Professional Documents
The Faculty has provided input to the revision of ANZCA/FPM Professional Document PS3 Guidelines for the Management of Major Regional Analgesia and ANZCA/JFICM/FPM Professional Document PS49 Guidelines on the Health of Specialists and Trainees.
The Board resolved to endorse Professional Document PS9 Guidelines on Sedation and/or Analgesia for Diagnostic and Interventional Medical or Surgical Procedures in place of PS48 Statement on clinical Principles for Procedural Sedation. Training units are referred to this document.
Memorandum of Understanding with Participating Colleges
A Memorandum of Understanding has now been signed by the Presidents of the five participating Colleges. The purpose of the this agreement is to further the aims and objectives of the Faculty and to facilitate communication and collaboration between the five founding Colleges.
Opioid Prescribing
The Faculty has provided feedback on the RACP/AChAM working paper: "Improving management of people with chronic non-malignant pain and opioid drug dependence". The common theme is to call for better management of persistent pain and there are calls for a government taskforce to be established to look at the broader issues.
Corporate Affairs
Strategic Planning
At the May 1 Board meeting, the Board reviewed progress of the strategic objectives developed in July 2006. Good progress has been made over the last two years against the Strategic Plan, which has been useful in directing Board activity.
Board Assessments
Assessment of individual Board Member performance and the efficacy of the Board will be addressed as part of the governance process. A Workshop on Board responsibility will be held in association with a Board meeting later in the year.
Regional Committees
Following the successful formation of the Queensland Regional Committee, Fellows in other regions with an interest in forming a Regional Committee are encouraged to contact the Executive Officer or a local Board Member.
Continuing Education Meetings
Spring Meeting 2008, Ayers Rock
The 2008 Spring Meeting at Voyages Ayers Rock Resort, on 18–20 September 2008 has received a huge response, if you are intending to register for this meeting please note places are limited to 250 and we have already received over 80 registrants. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the ANZCA/ASA/NZSA Acute Pain SIG and the IASP Acute Pain SIG. The theme is “Pain at the Centre ” and the scientific program will aim to highlight just some of the areas where the boundaries of acute and chronic pain merge, and when input into pain management from anaesthetists as well as acute and chronic pain clinicians will lead to better patient outcomes. Dr Jason Ray is the FPM Scientific Convenor for this meeting and organisation of the program is underway. Dr Andrew Rice (UK) has accepted the invitation as the FPM Foundation Visitor and Dr Steven Passik (US) has accepted the invitation as the Queensland Visitor (Pain Medicine).
ASM 2010, Christchurch
Dr Jeffrey Mogil (Canada) has accepted the invitation as the FPM Foundation Visitor for the 2010 ASM in Christchurch.

4th Bi annual Australian Health & Medical Research Congress

The 2008 Australian Health & Medical Research Congress (AHMRC) will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre. This congress will attract over 2000 registrants with over 30 societies and organisations involved.

RACS Writing Reports for Court Workshop
This important half day workshop offers skills based training in preparing medical reports for use in legal matters, focusing on the fundamentals of an excellent medico legal report. This course is being offered on Saturday 21 June 2008, places are limited so book asap.

Victorian Pain Medicine Training Program
Applications are invited for positions in the Victorian Pain Medicine Training Program commencing August 2008and February 2009.
Up to five, six month rotations may be available across Melbourne. The accredited training units include the Royal Children's Hospital, the Geelong Hospital, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management at St Vincent's Hospital and Bayside Pain Service: Caulfield Pain Management & Research Centre & Alfred Anaestheisa.
