Council supports #kidsoffnauru

ANZCA Council is supporting the Kids Off Nauru campaign calling for the transfer of all refugee children and their families off Nauru.

ANZCA President Dr Rod Mitchell has written to the co-ordinators of the campaign, asking that ANZCA be added to the list of medical colleges that have already stated their support. ANZCA now joins the 250-plus organisations, including the ASA, calling for the #kidsoffnauru.

“It is our responsibility to advocate for universal access to healthcare including safe surgery, anaesthesia and pain management. We believe such access is a basic human right, which should not be compromised for those seeking asylum,” Dr Mitchell said.

“Detaining children can have profound detrimental impacts on an already highly vulnerable group.”

Individual doctors can also add their voice by signing the online petition

The college, the Faculty of Pain Medicine and the Australian Society of Anaesthetists issued a position statement in 2015 on the Health of people seeking asylum.
