Expert witness resources

The College is often asked to recommend Fellows who can give expert medical evidence in legal proceedings involving medical matters.         

The requests are generally about assessments or explanations relating to anaesthesia and pain medicine.  


The College manages this process in line with Regulation 27 Performance assessment of anaesthetists.


There are a number of resources available for ANZCA Fellows asked to act as expert medical witnesses. The Australian Medical Association offers Ethical Guidelines for Doctors Acting as Medical Witnesses – 2011, which provides useful and concise guidance.


Fellows frequently asked to act as an expert medical witness or those with an additional interest can access further training through the Australasian College of Legal Medicine's expert witness program.
