National Pain Summit - a call to action
More than 200 delegates representing 130 organisations attending the National Pain Summit in Parliament House, Canberra on Thursday March 11 have united to back the world’s first National Pain Strategy and called on the Federal and state governments to implement its recommendations.
A campaign to destigmatise chronic pain and the introduction of standardised interdisciplinary pain management networks are two of the key recommendations of the Summit opened by the Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon. Nicola Roxon.
The National Pain Strategy is the result of collaboration between delegates at the meeting - leading authorities in pain medicine, other healthcare professionals, industry, funders and consumer groups.
The speakers on the program included leading international pain specialists and from respected health economist Helen Owens, who has been battling cancer pain for 16 years, and swimming great Kieren Perkins who spoke about his wife Symantha’s experiences with chronic pain from a carer’s perspective.
The day began with a scene-setting video in which pain patients told of their experiences with pain and the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Dr Penny Briscoe and the head of the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s pain services, Dr Malcolm Hogg, outlined the need for better pain management in Australia.
Two media releases were issued at the Summit:
Summit calls for Government action on pain (Thursday March 11, 2010)
and
Pain management on national radar for the first time (Thursday March 11, 2010)
