Update on Training for sedation in Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Procedures

Recently, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) jointly issued an updated policy on sedation (ANZCA Professional Document PS 9 Guidelines on Sedation and/or Analgesia for Diagnostic and Interventional Medical or Surgical Procedures).

Conflict of Interest policy

At ANZCA’s October Council meeting, a Conflict of Interest policy was approved. The purpose of the policy is to provide guidance in identifying and handling potential and actual conflicts of interest involving the College and its activities.

The 2009 ANZCA ASM will be held in Cairns from 2 to 6 May 2009. A number of free paper sessions and prize sessions are scheduled into this event and we encourage all Fellows and Trainees to consider submitting a free paper for either a session or a poster.

New drug

A new drug has just been approved for use in Australia. SITAGLIPTIN (Januvia) is an oral drug for type 2 Diabetes mellitus. It is a new class of drug, a dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP-4) inhibitor. Sitagliptin is an 'incretin enhancer' that increases the levels of active incretin by inhibiting their metabolism by DPP-4, thus prolonging their effect in stimulating insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion.

Electricity & greenhouse emissions

You might wonder whether turning off the lights when not required actually saves energy. Thanks to the efforts of College staff, we have saved a massive 15 per cent greenhouse gas emissions over the last six months compared to last year. A lot of this can be attributed to turning off lights and switching to energy efficient flourescent light globes. The impact has been significant.

In May 2008, the Government announced that $87.4m will be provided over the next three years to expand the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Anaesthetists are invited to comment on a draft report relating to the scope of anaesthetic involvement and training.
