It's your labour
What is an epidural?
An epidural is a specialised procedure performed by an appropriately trained doctor, usually an anaesthetist.
A special hollow needle will be inserted through the skin into the epidural space. A fine plastic tube called a catheter is threaded through it, and the needle is removed.
The catheter is taped in place and it is through this tubing that pain relieving drugs can be given.
Local anaesthetics are most commonly used. Pain relief can be tailored to your needs.
Why have an epidural?
An epidural is a very effective way of relieving labour pain.
It can make the experience of labour and delivery more satisfying, not only for you but also for any family and friends who may be with you.
You may be in a better position to enjoy your birth experience and feel in control.
There are medical reasons for having an epidural which include: high blood pressure, multiple pregnancies, or where an assisted delivery or caesarean section may be required.
When should you not have an epidural?
Some medical conditions may cause problems with epidurals.
If you have a medical condition including heart or lung disease, back problems, blood clotting problems or have a severe infection, consult an anaesthetist before you go into labour.
What may an epidural cause?
Epidurals provide a low risk method of relieving pain, however, the following are some of the effects you may experience.
- Some stinging and discomfort when the local anaesthetic is injected to numb your skin.
- A mild drop in blood pressure thus the need for a 'drip'
- Temporary muscle weakness in your legs.
- Shivering, although you won't feel cold.
- Itchiness, which can be treated if severe.
- Some tenderness at the site of insertion.
- Nerve damage which is extremely rare.
- Headache
Types of epidural services include:
- Anaesthetist on site 24 hours a day so an epidural is available whenever you choose.
- Anaesthetist on call so there may be some delay.
- Epidurals booked in advance of delivery date.
In some situations epidurals may not be available.
