ANZCA Trials Group

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists is the third largest professional body in Australia and New Zealand whose function is to cultivate and maintain the highest principles and standards in the training, practice and ethics of anaesthesia, intensive care, pain medicine and related sciences and branches of medicine.  The College has a strong commitment to improving the evidence base of anaesthesia and related disciplines and is particularly focused on the development of outcomes research aimed at improving the quality and safety of anaesthesia care.

In response to its commitment the College formed the ANZCA Trials Group - a unique collaboration of accomplished clinical researchers whose primary goal is to improve the evidence base of anaesthesia through the development and conduct of high quality, multi-centre randomized controlled trials and related research within anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine and pain medicine.  Members of the ANZCA Trials group are highly skilled in the theory and practice of research methodology with successful track records in large multi-centre randomized controlled trials (e.g. MASTER, B-AWARE, ENIGMA-II, ATACAS).  The ANZCA Trials Group also provides key research infrastructure support for Fellows and Trainees of the College.

GOALS OF THE ANZCA TRIALS GROUP

  • Conduct high quality multi-centre randomised controlled trials in anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine and pain medicine
  • Set research priorities for the College by inviting ideas and draft protocols from College Fellows for the development of multi-centre research including randomised controlled trials and surveys
  • Provide support for Fellows who wish to acquire funds for research and who need assistance with their ideas and the generation of grant proposals through the Pilot Grant Scheme
  • Provide research infrastructure support particularly in the areas of database development, data management, study site monitoring, randomisation and statistical analysis
  • Develop a network of interested researchers (Fellows and Trainees) for participation in multi-centre research as study site investigators
  • Provide expertise and advice to College Fellows and Trainees who are interested in developing systematic reviews or evidence based practice guidelines
  • Administer College-wide research survey dissemination on behalf of Fellows and Trainees wishing to survey their peers through the ANZCA Database
  • Assist Trainees with the design, development, implementation and dissemination of their Formal Projects Surveys
  • Provide technical advice and support in the development of randomised-controlled trials for researchers and facilitating implementation through its expanding research network.

Multi-centre Collaborative Research

Currently the Trials Group (in conjunction with its collaborative centres) currently administers a number of large multi-centre randomised trials “The Aspirin and Tranexamic Acid Trial for Coronary Artery Surgery – the ATACAS Trial” (www.atacas.org.au) and “The Evaluation of Nitrous Oxide Anaesthesia and cardiac morbidity after major surgery– the ENIGMA II trial” (www.enigma2.org.au), in addition to multi-centre surveys and audits (The REASON Audit). It is also the custodian of the Master Trial Database. Alongside this, the Trials Group assists and provides Fellows and Trainees with design, implementation, management and analysis support with their studies, audits and surveys.

If you would like more information or would like to register your interest with the Trials Group, please contact the Trials Group Research Coordinators.

Pilot Grant Scheme

The Trials Group has also developed a Pilot Grant Scheme which is open to all fellows of ANZCA, JFICM and FPM as a way of assisting researchers in the areas of pilot phase testing of trials, collection of baseline data using surveys or to establish a network of investigators.  Each year, the Trials Group offers up to five pilot grants each to the value $5,000-AUD, with research support from the Trials Group Research Coordinator. (Please refer to the Pilot Grant Application and Guide, or contact the Research Coordinators for more information).
