Curriculum Modules
Modules are a method of breaking down the curriculum into manageable components. They match specific learning objectives with clinical experience.
Modules are not necessarily fixed dedicated rotations, but rather a means to record the clinical and professional experience gained. The Anaesthesia Training Program has 12 modules:
| Module 1 | Introduction to Anaesthesia and Pain Management |
| Module 2 |
Professional Attributes |
| Module 3 |
Anaesthesia for Major and Emergency Surgery |
| Module 4 |
Obstetric Anaesthesia and Analgesia |
| Module 5 |
Anaesthesia for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery |
| Module 6 |
Neuroanaesthesia |
| Module 7 |
Anaesthesia for ENT, Eye, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery |
| Module 8 |
Paediatric Anaesthesia |
| Module 9 |
Intensive Care |
| Module 10 |
Pain Medicine – Advanced Module |
| Module 11 |
Education and Scientific Enquiry |
| Module 12 |
Professional Practice |
Requirements for module completion are specific to each module. For example, for Modules 2 and 12, Trainees are required to complete assigned reading and a Self Assessment Test. Other modules may require completion of clinical activities. Specific requirements are stated in the 'Overview' section of each module.
Training requires 33 months in Clinical Anaesthesia and at least three months in Intensive Care. Experience required in some clinical modules may be obtained outside dedicated blocks if appropriate experience is available. Experience in a module may be gained in part or in full outside the Trainee’s base hospital.
You must submit documentation verifying completion of the various Modules to the College as each component of training is completed. Modules are completed once a Trainee has confirmed with the Module Supervisor that he or she has:
- Completed specified clinical experience;
- Achieved the “Core Aims” stated in the module curriculum; and
- Completed all module-specific assessments.
Once you have completed a Module, you must discuss the outcomes with your Module Supervisor and obtain a signed Module Completion Form. This must also be signed by your Supervisor of Training.
A hard copy of the Curriculum Modules is mailed to each Trainee upon their registration with ANZCA, and each Supervisor of Training and Module Supervisor upon their appointment. A PDF copy can be downloaded from the Trainee Publications page on the ANZCA website.
