New drug
A new drug has just been approved for use in Australia. SITAGLIPTIN (Januvia) is an oral drug for type 2 Diabetes mellitus. It is a new class of drug, a dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP-4) inhibitor. Sitagliptin is an 'incretin enhancer' that increases the levels of active incretin by inhibiting their metabolism by DPP-4, thus prolonging their effect in stimulating insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion.

Electricity & greenhouse emissions
You might wonder whether turning off the lights when not required actually saves energy. Thanks to the efforts of College staff, we have saved a massive 15 per cent greenhouse gas emissions over the last six months compared to last year. A lot of this can be attributed to turning off lights and switching to energy efficient flourescent light globes. The impact has been significant.

While there are three ways to become a Fellow of the College (by Examination, by Election, and by granting of Honorary Fellowship), the vast majority of Fellows obtain their Fellowship by examination.  The requirements for admission to Fellowship through each of these three routes are described in Regulation 6: Admission to Fellowship of the College

Fellowship by Examination

Trainees who have completed the training and examination requirements of the College can apply to the Council for admission to Fellowship. Fellowship is awarded by Council to Trainees who have been deemed to have met the requirements described in Regulation 6.5.

Candidates admitted to Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists shall be entitled to place after their names the letters F.A.N.Z.C.A.

Fellowship by Election

Article 22 of the Articles of Association allows Council to elect to Fellowship, without examination, persons who have made a notable contribution to the science and practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and/or pain medicine in Australia or New Zealand.

Medical practitioners who meet this criterion and who are permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand, may apply for election to Fellowship without examination, if they fit one of four categories described in Regulation 6.3. Election to Fellowship requires at least three quarters of the Members of the Council present to vote in favour.

Honorary Fellowship

Similarly, Article 21 of the Articles of Association allows Council to confer Honorary Fellowship on distinguished persons who have made a notable contribution to the advancement of science and practice of anaesthesia, intensive care and/or pain medicine in Australia or New Zealand who are not practicing anaesthesia, intensive care and/or pain medicine in Australia or New Zealand.

Prospective fellows must be nominated in writing, formally proposed and seconded by two members of the Council. Three-quarters of the Council members must vote in favour.
