Applicants who register AND start Approved Training
If you're a medical practitioner wanting to practice anaesthesia in Australia or New Zealand, you must register with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The College provides a five-year anaesthesia training program leading to the Diploma of Fellowship.
You should be familiar with the requirements of this program prior to completing your registration application. Details of the program can be found in the following links and documents:
- ANZCA Anaesthesia Training Program (outline of the training program);
- Guidelines for the Selection of Trainees (eligibility and selection criteria);
- Regulation 14 (Eligibility for Fellowship by Examination); and
- Regulation 15 (Training and Examinations in Anaesthesia).
In order to register with the College, you must:
- Be a registered medical practitioner; and
- Have completed 12 months (full-time equivalent) Prevocational Medical Education and Training (PMET).
After you've registered, in order to start Approved Training, you must have completed at least 24 months (FTE) of PMET. These 24 months may include a maximum of 12 months experience --and no more-- in any combination of Clinical Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and or Pain Medicine.

Registration Fees
A Registration Fee of AUD $1,400 (Australian Dollars) is required. You should complete an ANZCA Fee Payment Form and pay by credit card, bank draft, money order or cheque (drawn on an Australian bank only).
Upon registration, you will receive a Learning Portfolio for recording and storing your progress in training and a copy of the Syllabus.
Once you are registered, you are expected to begin Approved Training within the next 12 months. If you are not in Approved Training in the next Hospital Year, you will be required to pay a Registration Holding Fee of AUD $400. This maintains your registration and ensures that you will continue to receive all College publications and mailouts. Failure to pay the Registration Holding Fee will result in your Registration being cancelled. You will then need to re-register with the College and pay the full Registration Fee once more.
Statement on Privacy
In the course of the training program, the College collects and holds personal information for the purpose of registration, training and examination program administration, and future Fellowship activities management. The information collected and held cannot be disclosed to third parties except as required by Law. The reasons for collecting the information and the use to which it is put are outlined in ANZCA's Privacy Policy. If you wish at any time to request access to the information you have provided, you may contact the College’s Privacy Officer.
Applicants who register AND start Approved Training
Many applicants register only when they are about to begin Approved Training. If you are starting your Training Year at an Approved Training Site, you must first register with the College and then complete an Annual Training Fee Form and pay the Annual Training fee by 31 January. Trainees who start training after 1 March must pay the Annual Training Fee within three months of starting Approved Training.
