EMAC and EMST Courses
Overview and registration details for Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) and Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) courses.
EMAC: Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises
Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) is a course intended to provide techniques in the management of anaesthetic emergencies. The EMAC course consists of five modules run over two and a half consecutive days at a simulation centre. It covers topics such as airway management, human performance, cardiovascular emergencies, anaesthetic emergencies and trauma management.
EMAC is offered in Melbourne (St Vincent’s and Southern Health), Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Wellington, and Auckland by external providers. Please contact individual centres for bookings and enquiries. Course dates and contact details for each of the simulation centres is provided below.
EMST: Early Management of Severe Trauma
EMST is an intensive course in the management of injury victims in the first one to two hours following injury. It emphasises life saving skills and systematic clinical approach to managing severe trauma. It is a two and half day course adapted from the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) course of the American College of Surgeons in 1988.
It is offered by the Royal Australasian Collegs of Surgeons (RACS). For further details and registration information refer to the RACS website.
Accreditation of Centres
ANZCA accredits Simulation Centres across Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia, to offer the EMAC Course to ANZCA trainees. Accreditation requires an onsite review by the College in order to assess a Centre’s ability to offer EMAC in accordance with explicit standards set out by ANZCA. Centres applying for accreditation should complete the EMAC Data Sheet and Accreditation Report ( 543KB).
A College Professional Document outlining standards for accreditation, and a Guide to assist Centres in preparing for review, will shortly be available. In the meantime, please contact the College for this information.
ANZCA Training Requirements
ANZCA Trainees must complete either the EMAC or EMST course as part of their required training. Although there is no specific mandated time for Trainees to take these courses, it is suggested that 18 months of training first be completed. This allows sufficient experience and familiarity with the anaesthesia environment to provide the grounding for the courses. Early registration is recommended for both courses.
