The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) is responsible for the examination and qualification of anaesthetists and standards of anaesthesia practice in Australia and New Zealand. A comprehensive curriculum review concluded in May 2010, resulting in recommendations for curriculum change. ANZCA Curriculum Revision 2013 was launched in July 2010 and aims to produce a revised training program that fulfills the recommendations from the review.

Transitioning to the Revised Curriculum in 2013

The principles for transition to the Revised Curriculum are presented in the documents below. These principles have been approved by the College Council, ahead of the introduction of the Revised Curriculum for the 2013 hospital employment year.

During 2012, the College will contact individual trainees to review their training status and to confirm how they will be transitioned to the revised program. Details of this process will be communicated to trainees during the first half of 2012.

Project overview

A comprehensive review of the ANZCA training program was completed and reported to the ANZCA Education and Training Committee (ETC) in February/March 2010 and to ANZCA Council in April 2010.

The review, which began in late 2008, addressed issues facing the medical systems in which anaesthetists work and train, including an increase in the number of junior doctors seeking places in vocational training; government calls for more training settings in the private sector and rural areas; and the need to maintain a contemporary training program in both clinical content and educational method. The outcomes of the review included a new ANZCA Curriculum Framework (download here) and recommendations for curriculum change (download here).

The ANZCA Curriculum Revision 2013 project was launched in July 2010, to revise the ANZCA training program. The project aims to develop and write the curriculum to produce a new training program, in line with recommendations from the curriculum review. Its objective is to enhance educational quality in three key areas of the ANZCA training program:

  • The teaching, learning and assessment methods used.
  • Processes undertaken to manage and enhance the program, including continuous evaluation and quality improvement systems and development, training and support for ANZCA teachers.
  • Operational matters associated with the program.

To date, the work has been undertaken by curriculum authoring groups overseen by the Curriculum Redesign Steering Group (CRSG). Operational aspects involved with the development or the revised program are being overseen by the by the Curriculum Project Advisory Group (CPAG) with input from the Curriculum Project Coordination Team (CPCT)

The new training program will be launched for the 2013 training year.
