Examinations
International medical graduate specialists (IMGS) who have been interviewed by an IMGS interview panel in Australia or New Zealand and have submitted a satisfactory clinical practice assessment form, may apply to present for either the IMGS performance assessment or the final examination. The IMGS performance assessment is the equivalent of the ANZCA final examination minus the multiple-choice question paper. These assessments are held concurrently with the final examination twice a year. Please be aware that transfers between examination categories will not be permitted after the closing date for exam applications.
The final examination consists of four parts and is out of a total of 100 marks:

Multiple choice questions (MCQ), which accounts for 20 marks and 20 per cent of the total score.

Short answer questions (SAQ), which accounts for 20 marks and 20 per cent of the total score.

Medical vivas, which accounts for 12 marks and 12 per cent of the total score.

Anaesthesia vivas, which accounts for 48 marks and 48 per cent of the total score.
In order to pass the final examination, a candidate must pass the anaesthesia vivas and one other section and have an overall score of at least 50 per cent.
The IMGS examination consists of three parts and is out of a total of 80 marks:

Short answer questions (SAQ), which accounts for 20 marks and 25 per cent of the total score.

Medical vivas, which accounts for 12 marks and 15 per cent of the total score.

Anaesthesia vivas, which accounts for 48 marks and 60 per cent of the total score.
In order to pass the IMGS examination a candidate must pass the anaesthesia vivas and have an overall score of at least 50 per cent.
In some circumstances an IMGS may be exempt the written sections of the IMGS examination. In this this instance the exam will consist of two parts and is out of a total of 60 marks:

Medical vivas, which accounts for 12 marks and 20 per cent of the total score.

Anaesthesia vivas, which accounts for 48 marks and 80 per cent of the total score.
In order to pass this examination, a candidate must pass the anaesthesia vivas and have an overall score of at least 50 per cent.
