EMAC and EMST overview

EMAC: Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises

The Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC) course provides techniques in the management of anaesthetic emergencies. It consists of five modules run over two and a half consecutive days at a simulation centre, covering topics such as airway management, human performance, cardiovascular emergencies, anaesthetic emergencies and trauma management.

EMAC is offered in Melbourne (St Vincent’s and Southern Health), Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Wellington, Auckland and Hong Kong by external providers. Please contact individual centres for bookings and inquiries. Course dates and contact details are provided below.

EMST: Early Management of Severe Trauma

The Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course is an intensive course in the management of injury victims in the first two hours following injury. It emphasises life-saving skills and systematic clinical approach to managing severe trauma. It is a two and half day course adapted from the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) course of the American College of Surgeons in 1988.

EMST is offered by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). For further details and registration information refer to the RACS website.

Accreditation of centres

ANZCA accredits simulation centres across Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia, to offer the EMAC course to ANZCA trainees. Accreditation requires an onsite review by the College to assess a centre’s ability to offer EMAC in accordance with ANZCA standards.  Centres applying for accreditation should contact tac@anzca.edu.au.

A College professional document outlining standards for accreditation and a guide to assist centres in preparing for review, will be available soon. Please contact the College for further information.

ANZCA training requirements

ANZCA trainees must complete either the EMAC or EMST course as part of their required training.  Although there is no mandated time for trainees to take these courses, it is suggested that 18 months of training be completed first to allow sufficient experience and familiarity with anaesthesia to provide the grounding for the courses. Early registration is recommended for both courses.
