Assessor Requests
If you wish to undertake training that varies from the standard Anaesthesia Training Program or if you have undertaken previous training experience that can be credited as part of your ANZCA training, you may request prospective or retrospective approval through the DPA Assessor.
NEW ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE COLLEGE ASSESSOR ROLE
Prospective approval is required for:
- Provisional Fellowship Program
- Part-time training
- Overseas training
- Clinical training outside of clinical anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine
- Interruptions to training (including parental leave)
Retrospective approval is required for:
- Partial training in a foreign training program
- Recognition of postgraduate qualifications in anaesthesia for trainees who work in Affiliated Training Regions (Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia)
- Senior House Officer appointments in anaesthesia in the United Kingdom
- Recognition of previously undertaken full-time research or training in an anaesthesia-related discipline
- FJFICM
- Retrospective Module completion
Prospective Approval Requests
Provisional Fellowship Program
Trainees wishing to undertake their final (fifth) year of training in a Provisional Fellowship Position may seek Prospective Approval to do so. Eligibility for these types of positions requires Trainees to have completed 48 months of training, documented completion of Modules 1-10 and have successfully completed both the Primary and the Final Examinations (Regulation 15.7.5).
Implications of undertaking an Provisional Fellow Position as opposed to being an Advanced Trainee Year 3.

Part-Time Training
Trainees wishing to undertake training in a part-time capacity may apply to have this training time approved (see Regulation 15.9 & 15.10).

Overseas Training, or Formal Research or Clinical Training outside of Clinical Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine
Trainees wishing to undertake training either Overseas or in Clinical Training outside of Clinical Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine (e.g., Emergency Medicine, Clinical Medicine or Formal Research) will require prospective approval to ensure that this time can be credited towards their training (Regulation 15.5.2.3, 15.6.3 & 15.7.4)
Interruptions to Training (including Parental Leave)
As per Regulation 15.10, Approved Training must include at least two continuous years of Training Time, interrupted only by Normal Leave. Any period of leave longer than Normal Leave is considered interrupted training.
15.10.1 Extended parental leave or sick leave must be notified to the College and advice obtained as to the effect of Training Time.
15.10.2 If training is interrupted for more than one year, subsequent training must include at least one continuous year of supervised training.

Retrospective Approval Requests
Partial Training in a Foreign Training Program
A Trainee who has completed partial training in a foreign training program that predates commencement of Approved Training, and who is not deemed an Overseas Trained Specialist (Regulation 15.11.1).

Trainees who work in an Affiliated Training Region (Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia) and who hold a postgraduate qualification in anaesthesia
A Trainee who works in an Affiliated Training Region (Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia) and who holds a postgraduate qualification in anaesthesia by examination that is accepted by Council (Regulation 15.11.2).

Senior House Officer appointment in anaesthesia in the United Kingdom
A Trainee who has occupied a Senior House Officer appointment in anaesthesia in the United Kingdom after 1 April 1996 (Regulation 15.11.3).

Recognition of previously undertaken full-time research or training in an anaesthesia-related discipline
A Trainee who has previously undertaken full-time research or training in an anaesthesia-related discipline conducted by another College (Regulation 15.5.2.3 & 15.11.4).

FJFICM
A Trainee with FJFICM may be granted retrospective approval of supervised training in Clinical Anaesthesia in Approved Training Sites during training for FJFICM (Regulation 15.11.5).
Retrospective Module Completion
Trainees who have had training time retrospectively accredited (in either ANZCA or Overseas Hospitals) may have Modules signed off by their Module Supervisor and/or current Supervisor of Training, after satisfactory discussion about the relevant Module experience, and the provision of satisfactory documentation (e.g., log book or signed entry in the Learning Portfolio ( 287 kB) to support the completion of the Module.
