ANZCA Trainee Newsletter - January 2008

1.     2008 Annual Training Fees

Annual Training fees are due on:

 

31 January 2008 for all countries except Hong Kong,
Singapore and Malaysia

30 June 2008 for Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia

A BPAY facility will be added for Australian-based trainees early in 2008.  It is not currently available

 

2.     Approved Vocational Training Forms

It has come to the Department’s attention that Trainees are submitting Approved Vocational Training Forms before completion of a training position and/or the Hospital Employment Year.

Training can not be accredited until the position is completed.

As stated in Regulations 15.6.1 & 15.7.1 (2007) ‘Trainees must submit the relevant Approved Vocational Training Form within three months of completing each training year.  A Trainee who fails, without reasonable excuse, to submit the form on time, is disqualified from Approved Training from the date that the form was due to the date the form was received by the College.’

A Supervisor(s) of Training as required to sign the form for each hospital rotation in which training is undertaken during a training year.

Trainees are required to forward the original Approved Vocational Training Form and retain a copy for their records.

3.     Module Completion Forms

Module Completion Forms can be submitted at the same time as Approved Vocational Training Forms.  Theses forms are required to be signed by the Module Supervisor and/or the Supervisor of Training. And include the Hospital ID Number.

Trainees are also reminded to complete:

·        On-line self-assessment test to complete Module 2 Professional Attributes during Basic Training

·        On-line self-assessment test to complete Module 12 Professional Practice during Advanced Training

 

4.     EMAC/EMST

As per Regulation 15.5.5 (2007), the EMAC or the EMST course, or an equivalent course recognised by Council must be satisfactorily completed, and may be undertaken at any stage during training.

  1. Prospective Approval of Training Time

 

The DPA Assessor would like to remind Trainees to seek prospective approval of training as required under Regulation 15.  If for some reason the request can not be approved and the period of training can not be accredited towards the training program trainees will mark time with regard to accrual of training time.

 

The following training may require prospective approval:

15.5.2.3          An optional training component in related disciplines and research of up to 24 months in any combination of:

 

·        Intensive Care Medicine in a unit approved by Council (other than in 15.5.2.2)

·        Neonatal Intensive Care in a unit approved by Council

·        Pain Medicine

·        Clinical Medicine

·        Emergency Medicine

·        Retrieval Medicine

·        A formal research program of at least six months duration.

·        Any other training experience that is relevant to the practice of anaesthesia.

 

15.5.2.3.1    The training experience must be recognised by the relevant College or training body as appropriate for specialist training.

 

15.5.2.3.2    This training experience need not be continuous, but except for approved formal research programs, each component period must last at least three months.

 

15.5.2.3.3    Trainees must submit an application in writing to seek prospective approval from the Assessor for Clinical Training outside of Clinical Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine or Pain Medicine, including formal research programs. The application must include comprehensive details of the proposed training experience to demonstrate its relevance to anaesthesia.  A rotation in a Regional Training Program, such as a research secondment, does not require formal approval
