REGULATION 15 – TRAINING IN ANAESTHESIA
Intensive Care Medicine Component of the ANZCA Training Program
Compulsory ICM
All ANZCA Trainees must complete a minimum of 3 months (may be in 1 month blocks) of Intensive Care Medicine in Units approved for Compulsory Intensive Care Medicine Training as per Regulation 15.5.2.2 (2007).
Units approved for the Compulsory 3 months of Intensive Care Medicine Training under Regulation 15.5.2.2 are:
1. Those accredited by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for Core Training.
2. Those accredited by the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiology.
3. Those in hospitals in Singapore and Malaysia that are accredited by the College for Anaesthesia Training.

Basic ICM
ANZCA Trainees may have training time accredited (minimum 3 months) if completed in Units approved by JFICM for Basic Training only. This training will be accredited under Regulation 15.5.2.3 (2007) and, if they have not yet done so, Trainees will still be required to complete 3 months of Intensive Care Medicine in a Unit approved for Compulsory Intensive Care Medicine Training as per Regulation 15.5.2.2 (2007). The experience gained during time spent in a JFICM Unit approved for Basic Training only may contribute towards Module Accreditation.
Retrospectively Accredited ICM
Trainees who apply for retrospective accreditation of previous ICM training (minimum 3 months), prior to their ANZCA registration date, may have this credited under Regulation 15.11.4 (2007) which states:
‘A Trainee who has previously undertaken full-time research or training in an anaesthesia-related discipline conducted by another College, may have this experience recognised under 15.5.2.3.’
This being the case, Trainees who have ICM time accredited are still required to complete 3 months of Intensive Care Medicine in Units approved for Compulsory Intensive Care Medicine Training as per Regulation 15.5.2.2 (2007).
However, experience gained during this retrospectively accredited training time may contribute towards Module Accreditation.
