Conflict of Interest policy
At ANZCA’s October Council meeting, a Conflict of Interest policy was approved. The purpose of the policy is to provide guidance in identifying and handling potential and actual conflicts of interest involving the College and its activities.

1.     Primary Exam closing date

REMINDER - The Primary Exam Application closing date is:

2nd December 2007

 

2.     Two Continuous Years of Training, Interruptions to Training & Normal Leave

Trainees are reminded that as per Regulation 15.10 ‘Approved Training must include at least two continuous years of Training Time (in full-time equivalents), interrupted only by Normal Leave.  Any period of leave longer than Normal Leave (See Regulation 15.8 below) is considered interrupted training.

 

15.10.1                Extended parental leave or sick leave must be notified to the College and advice obtained as to the effect on Training Time.

 

15.10.2                If training is interrupted for more than one year, subsequent training must include at least one continuous year of supervised training.’

Regulation 15.8 Normal Leave

 

‘A total of 16 weeks leave for all purposes (e.g. annual leave, sick leave, study leave, examination leave, parental leave) may be taken during the minimum 24 months of Basic Training, and thereafter up to eight weeks leave for all purposes may be taken for each additional 12 months of training.  A total of 24 weeks leave for all purposes may be taken during the minimum 36 months of Advanced Training, and thereafter up to eight weeks leave for all purposes may be taken for each additional 12 months of training.’

 

If you are intending to interrupt your training please forward a brief letter to the College stating the expected dates of the interruption and a brief description of the reason.  This information will be kept on your training file for reference.

 

Interruptions to training of one year or less will extend the expected completion date of your training.

 

Interruptions of more than one year may result in having to complete one full year of training irrespective of the amount of training left to complete.

 

  1. Report from Council

a.     Regulation 15 – Training in Anaesthesia

To reflect changes to the new trainee process and system for payment of training fees, revisions were made to Regulation 15 as follows:

 

15.3Registration – following introduction of the Training Agreements, the requirement for a signed Agreement, rather than the previously required Privacy Statement has been included (Reg 15.3.3).

 

This Regulation now requires trainees wishing to register for College training to provide an original birth certificate or the identity page of a current passport, or a copy certified by a JP or equivalent official (Reg 15.3.4).

 

15.4Training Fees – the due date for the Annual Training Fee has been changed from 30th April to 31st January.  This is for all trainees except those in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia who must pay by 30th June (Reg 15.4.2).

 

Trainees who spend more than six months outside Australia, New Zealand and affiliated training regions during any single continuous year of Approved Training must now pay the full Annual Training Fee (Reg 15.4.2.1).

 

Trainees granted retrospective recognition of training experience which predates commencement of Approved Training must pay the full Annual Training Fee for each year of credited training (Reg 15.4.2.2).

    1. Senior Staff Appointments

Director of Professional Affairs

Dr Steuart Henderson has been appointed as a DPA to undertake primarily the Assessor role and to have responsibility for reviewing and updating the Regulations for Council.  Dr Henderson is a past-Council member, based just outside Wellington, who served as Assessor and Chair of the Education and Training Committee during his term of office.

 

Director of Education

Medical Educator, Ms Mary Lawson, will join the staff in February next year to take up her appointment as Director of Education.  Ms Lawson’s experience in both clinical and educational environments in Australia and the UK, and her research activity, will be of great relevance to her new position.

 

    1. Professional Documents

PS9 – Guidelines on Conscious Sedation for Diagnostic, Interventional Medical and Surgical Procedures was approved by Council.
