Recording training
Training portfolio system
The training portfolio system is a web-based system built for ANZCA. This information is designed for Fellows and trainees and information technology leads in ANZCA-accredited hospitals delivering training.
The training portfolio system can be accessed by using a College username and password at:
If you have any access issues, please contact the College using training@anzca.edu.au
New update – cases and procedures added to the TPS
Following feedback received from trainees and supervisors of training, the training portfolio system (TPS) has been updated with additional items in the cases and procedures section. The College has produced a spreadsheet which should act as a helpful reference to see which items are available under each drop-down menu in this section. The spreadsheet also confirms which items have a volume of practice requirement, displayed as a number in the column to the left of each item. The spreadsheet can be accessed here.
Training portfolio system (TPS) user guides
The following guides provide an overview of the features and functions of the TPS.
Using the system: trainee guides
The following trainee user guides have been produced to assist you in orientating the training portfolio system.
The TPS user guide for trainees is available to download here.
The guides below are extracts from the above guide for quick reference.

Technical access
The training portfolio system will be accessible from many systems and devices but a few checks before the start of the hospital employment year will ensure that you can access the system in your department. A checklist for supervisors of training and hospital information technology staff is available here.
Updating trainee's portfolios with details relating to partially completed 2004 curriculum modules
How do I enter the details on the TPS?
This guide is designed to help supervisors of training (SOTs) with the process of adding credit or adjusting target information in the training portfolio system (TPS) for trainees who have transitioned from the 2004 to the 2013 curriculum. Access the guide here.
How do I interpret the process?
The transition applies to the allocation of credit for partially completed modules. The target and credit information relates to both volume of practice for cases and procedures and workplace-based assessment and this has been mapped for SOTs. Access the guide here.
Using the TPS
The TPS is an integral part of the revised training program. It is a web-based system designed and built for ANZCA training. It will become the 'hub' for training program data and is where trainees:
- Record their clinical experiences including volume of practice (cases, procedures, time), clinical placement plans and other achievements.
- View workplace-based assessments.
- View clinical placement reviews and core unit reviews.
- Provide details about courses attended.
- View details of examinations.
Anaesthetists who supervise trainees and perform workplace-based assessments will also have access to the training portfolio system but will have different levels of access to trainee training records.
All trainees transitioning to the revised curriculum have been provided with training portfolio system access at the commencement of the 2013 hospital employment year.
Trainees and supervisors are able to use the training portfolio system from a variety of devices including Apple and Windows desktop computers and laptops, Android tablets, Apple iPads and iPhones and numerous smart phones. Testing has been also conducted on a variety of popular browsers.
In the training portfolio system, trainees will be presented with a home page. The menu item on the left outlines the different sections of the TPS, for example 'Cases and procedures', which allows the trainee to quickly navigate to the area where they can record a case or session.
How do users access the training portfolio system?
Via the web using either:
- Desktop computers.
- Laptops.
- Smart phones.
- Tablet devices.
Testing has being conducted on desktops, Windows laptops, Apple Macbook Pro, Sony Android tablet, Apple iPad, plus Samsung Galaxy SIII smart phone and iPhone4.
What is the training portfolio system coded in?
The training portfolio system is a web-based application coded in .NET
What browsers does the training portfolio system work with?
Tests have been conducted using the current versions and one version older than the current version for the browsers listed below.
- Firefox (latest versions).
- Safari.
- IE 8/9 (not previous versions).
- Opera.
- Chrome.
Can the TPS be downloaded from the app store?
No. The training portfolio system is mobile compatible but a web-based solution rather than an app.
Does the TPS work with Internet Explorer 6?
The TPS will not work with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. ANZCA is aware of the constraints many hospitals have whereby legacy applications require Internet Explorer 6 or 7 and are not compatible with Internet Explorer 8 or 9. In these situations, the recommended solution is the installation of an alternative browser (such as Firefox or Chrome). We understand it is possible to have the browser configured so that it may only be used for the training portfolio system if this is required.
What about firewalls?
If you have internet access restrictions in place at your hospital, ANZCA can provide the URL and IP address for the training portfolio system so you can make arrangements to configure your firewall as appropriate.
We are happy to assist if you would like to test connectivity from your hospital.
Can I use the TPS if I am not connected to the internet?
Yes, but only for trainees when recording cases and procedures. Cases and procedures logged when internet access is not available will be automatically synchronised when re-engaging with WiFi or 3G. They will be stored locally on the trainee’s phone until the next time they access the training portfolio system and have internet access.
Who to contact if I have further questions?
You are welcome to email questions to training@anzca.edu.au.
