Area of Need process

The Area of Need (AoN) process applies to Australia only and is used to address medical workforce shortages in designated areas. The Area of Need process alone does not lead to fellowship of ANZCA or specialist registration by the Medical Board of Australia.

 

ANZCA’s role is to assess the suitability of an individual for a particular position. ANZCA’s support of an international medical graduate specialist (IMGS) to work in an Area of Need position is site specific and cannot be transferred. ANZCA is unable to assist with sourcing employment. Applicants can search state health department websites to find Area of Need positions.

 

Applications for assessment via the Area of Need pathway should be sent directly to ANZCA.  All applications must be submitted using the application form and must contain all required documentation as listed on the application form.  Once ANZCA has supported you in an Area of Need position, you may apply for limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia. The College will arrange for a Fellow of the College to conduct an onsite visit after you have been in the position for approximately two months.

 

ANZCA support for an IMGS in an Area of Need position and any subsequent extensions of that support will normally be for 12 months from the date of starting in the position and is conditional on compliance with the requirements set out in the individual’s letter of support, which include a satisfactory on-site assessment and commencement of the IMGS assessment process.
