Perioperative medicine – Birth of a specialty

Dr Joel Symons is a specialist anaesthetist and the international head of perioperative medicine at The Alfred Hospital and Monash University. He’s chair of the Perioperative Medicine Education Group at ANZCA which is developing the curriculum for the ANZCA Perioperative Medicine Diploma commencing in 2023. He’s co-founder of the Monash Short Course and Master of Perioperative Medicine and has co-edited the book Perioperative Medicine for the Junior Clinician.
 
Joel is on the International Board of Perioperative Medicine and an executive member of the Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group. His research activities involve perioperative iron management and perioperative iron metabolism. He’s also on the steering committee for the ITACS trial and is conducting the HERROES trial investigating markers of iron deficiency in perioperative cardiac patients.
