Professor Cheung Chi Wai, MBBS(HK), MD(HKU), FHKCA, FFPMANZCA, FHKAM(Anaesthesiology), Dip Pain Mgt (HKCA) is Peter Hung Professor in Pain Research (Endowed Professor), the Chairperson and Clinical Professor of the Department of Anaesthesiology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Honorary Consultant of the Departments of Anaesthesiology at Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), Grantham Hospital and the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital.  He is also Chief of Service of the Department of Anaesthesiology at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, Director of Division of Pain Medicine at QMH, Director of Pain Management Center and Chair of Speciality, Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital (GHK) (an affiliated hospital of the LKS Faculty of Medicine). 

Notably, he is the first and currently only academic doctor working in the field of pain medicine in Hong Kong (HK). He was granted the Doctor of Medicine degree by HKU with research in pain medicine. He always stresses on translational pain research. Therefore, apart from clinical pain research, he is now working on basic pain research related to neuromodulation and pain, and epigenetic and pain. Professor Cheung has published extensively in peer reviewed scientific journals in anaesthesiology and pain medicine. He is a regularly invited journal reviewer for many international peer reviewed journals. He is currently the Section Editor of Pain Practice. In 2011, Professor Cheung established the Laboratory and Clinical Research Institute for Pain at HKU that is a pioneering interdisciplinary academic platform to support and nurture both basic science and clinical pain research in Hong Kong. Apart from his work at University, he is also very active in his medical specialty. He is the Immediate Past President of Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists, and the Past President of the Society of Anaesthetists of Hong Kong.
