ANZCA Foundation forum: Reducing Perioperative Complications

This forum will examine the urgent need to pursue continuous improvement in patient outcomes, through reducing potentially life-threatening postoperative complications after surgery and anaesthesia. Dinner and beverages served during the sessions.

Speakers and panellists will discuss how medical research driving gold-standard evidence, college, university and hospital collaboration, and improved clinical practice, are all critically important to effectively addressing this national problem.

Themes will include:

  • The widespread incidence and impact of perioperative complications in Australia.
  • Targeting better outcomes for higher risk patients.
  • Clinical trials, evidence, improved patient outcomes, and more cost-effective healthcare.
  • Investing in perioperative research as a proven strategy, with examples of ANZCA Foundation-supported studies that have created impact and value.
  • ANZCA’s research support model, and proven pathways to gold-standard evidence, implementation, and practice change.

The forum will highlight this major need; ANZCA’s scientific and clinical trials research track record in delivering outcomes to reduce perioperative complications; and explore strategies to further improve impact through collaborative funding and partnerships.

Perioperative complications generate great personal and economic costs, and are endemic in the health system. Recognising the problem, and investing and collaborating in research, are powerful strategies for saving and improving lives.
