Cosmetic surgery review welcomed

01 December 2021

Read our letter to MBA Chair Dr Anne Tonkin, asking for the review to incorporate anaesthesia and sedation, and for the college to participate in the review.

We welcome the review of cosmetic surgery announced on 30 November by Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and have written to Dr Anne Tonkin, the chair of the MBA, asking for the review to incorporate anaesthesia and sedation, and for the college to participate in the review.

ANZCA has long been an advocate for better regulation in the cosmetic surgery industry and on 18 November wrote to all Australian health ministers calling for urgent action to regulate the industry following the ABC TV Four Corners program “Cosmetic Cowboys” that aired on 25 October, and highlighting the work the college is leading with 27 health practitioner stakeholder groups to review our professional document PS09 Guideline on sedation and/or analgesia for diagnostic and interventional medical, dental or surgical procedures.
