Anaesthetists awarded top research grant

ANZCA past president Professor David Scott and the University of Melbourne have been awarded nearly $870,000 for the Transfusion Triggers in Cardiac Surgery Australia TRICS-IV trial from the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

The grant was one of two international clinical trials that received a total of $4.1 million in funding to help improve therapy for patients living with two of Australia’s deadliest conditions - cardiovascular disease and melanoma.

Blood transfusion is common in cardiac surgery and the three year TRICS-IV study is examining the effect of a restrictive versus liberal approach to blood transfusion on patients having cardiac surgery.

The trial, supported by ANZCA’s Clinical Trials Network, is being led by Professor Scott at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne with anaesthetists Dr Raymond Hu, Professor Paul Myles, Dr Thomas Painter, Professor Colin Royse and Dr Ben Slater.

It is the Australian arm of an international collaboration with the lead group based in Toronto, Canada.
