Hood ventilator wins top COVID-19 research grant

The innovative ventilated hood for patients in isolation developed by Melbourne anaesthetist Dr Forbes McGain and engineer Professor Jason Monty has been recognised with Australian Government research funding.

The University of Melbourne project developed the hood which provides better respiratory treatment for patients, reducing the need for invasive ventilation, and also gives hospital staff greater protection from COVID-19, reducing viral levels in the immediate surroundings.

The hood is among five coronavirus research projects that will receive a share of $A4.1 million in Australian research funding.

“The novel hood is effective, comfortable, reusable and can be rapidly improved for urgent supply to Australian hospitals, clinics, GP surgeries and beyond,” Health Minister Greg Hunt said.
