CPD review project update - November 2022
16 November 2022
We are updating the ANZCA and FPM continuing professional development (CPD) program due to revised regulatory guidelines. This news item outlines project progress since the last communication.
ANZCA President Dr Chris Cokis explains the updates to our CPD program in 2023 and beyond.
The CPD review project group last met on 25 October 2022. At the meeting, group members continued to review the CPD handbook to reflect the revised regulatory guidelines and updated ANZCA and FPM CPD program requirements. Group members also considered communications initiatives to ensure fellows and other CPD participants are well-informed of the updates and feel supported to meet their CPD requirements.
CPD standard and policies
The 2023 ANZCA and FPM CPD standard, CPD mandatory compliance policy and CPD special consideration policy were approved by ANZCA Council at their November meeting. The updated standard and policies reflect the revised regulatory guidelines and 2023 ANZCA and FPM CPD Program requirements. Sections of the documents have also been generally updated for clarity and readability.
The standard and policies are available on the 2023 CPD program webpage.
Practice without direct patient care (previously non-clinical practice type)
The CPD-RPG and CPD Committee proposed amending the term “non-clinical practice type” to practice without direct patient care. This is because the college recognises that “clinical support” roles include teaching, research, leadership, management and other activities. Whilst these do not involve direct individual patient management, they are vital to support high quality and safe clinical care. The term ‘practice without direct patient care’ better reflects this than does the term “non-clinical”.
We have shared an email with more information for those currently participating in the CPD program under the ‘non-clinical practice type’. The CPD requirements for those who practice without direct patient care are included in the 2023 CPD standard.
CPD webinars
CPD-RPG and CPD Committee members held CPD webinars for fellows and other CPD participants in Australia and New Zealand, on 15 November and 21 November respectively. At the webinars, participants heard from group members about the revised regulatory guidelines and how they could meet the 2023 CPD program requirements. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions.
The webinar recordings will be available for those who were not able to join on the day.
CPD portfolio testing
While the look and feel of the online CPD portfolio will remain largely the same, we are updating the system to incorporate the 2023 program requirements. Our thanks to members who have expressed interest in user testing and provided valuable feedback on the updated dashboard. Final amendments and support resources are being finalised ahead of the transition to the 2023 annual CPD program.
