FPM working group opportunities

We're seeking expressions of interest from pain medicine new fellows, trainees and fellows with educational experience or enthusiasm/interest to participate in one of three working groups.

The FPM Learning and Development Committee is reviewing the assessment structure of the pain medicine training program with a view to redesign the program of assessment to ensure it is fit for purpose and aligned to contemporary educational assessment practices. 

The key aims of these working groups are outlined below:

WBA Working Group

  • Review the current workplace-based assessment (WBA) structure to determine it is fit for purpose and identify opportunities to adopt more programmatic approach to assessment.
  • Determine and develop the proposed model of assessments including, review of existing tools and frequency of assessments.
  • Consider introducing entrustable professional activities and explore a competency-based approach to meet the requirements of the training program.


Written Mastery Exam Working Group:

  • Review the written fellowship exam and explore converting it to a ‘mastery style’ exam.
  • Consider the process and timing of a mastery written exam.
  • Propose the structure of such an exam and the required standard to achieve a pass.


Group Decision-Making Working Group:

  • Explore and propose a potential model of group decision making in the pain medicine training program.
  • Propose the use of new and/or existing tools including In-training assessments and training stage reviews.


The working groups will begin in June 2023 and  finish around the middle of 2024 for implementation in 2025.
