NZ ushers in major health reforms

18 July 2022

On 1 July, New Zealand started a new era for the health sector.

Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand has replaced the country's 20 district health boards (DHBs). It is likely to take several years to implement the full changes.

ANZCA is already working with the new bodies, Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, Te Aka Whai Ora – Māori Health Authority, the Public Health Agency and the new-look Ministry of Health

DHBs continue to effectively exist behind the scenes until September to help ease the transition, but the elected boards do not. Radio New Zealand did an explainer on the first day of the reforms.
