ANZCA Statement on Professional Responsibility

Concerns have been raised about some fellows who may not be upholding the college's mission statement.

ANZCA has been contacted recently by several fellows who have raised concerns about a small number of members who do not appear to be upholding the college’s mission of “serving the community by fostering safety and high quality patient care in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain medicine”.

The key goals of our mission are to promote professional standards, patient safety and education in our specialties and to advance the science and practice of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain medicine.

ANZCA is committed to supporting evidence-based scientific and medical research to guide our specialties and our stance as a college will always be to follow the advice of experts.

We do not condone the misrepresentation or promotion of unfounded COVID-19 therapies or treatments, and we support the vaccination of all frontline health workers, including anaesthetists and pain specialists.

We remind fellows that the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) have the authority to investigate practitioners who breach national medical boards’ codes of conduct.

Breaches can also include content posted on social media.
