Spinal cord stimulators

Concerns about spinal cord stimulators raised in an article in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald are not new and FPM has been working towards the development of a Pain Device Implant Registry  for several years.

The project has not progressed due to a lack of funding and regulatory support from industry and government despite the faculty’s advocacy to highlight its importance.
In 2019, FPM published its Procedures in pain medicine clinical care standard and has established a program for endorsement of training and practice in procedures including implantable devices.

The pilot for the Procedures Endorsement Program was completed at the end of 2021, and is now in place to be fully implemented over the next five years. It should be noted that this endorsement of skills and standards is only applicable to specialist pain medicine physicians who hold fellowship of the Faculty.
