New SOT induction modules and support hub

30 April 2022

Modules in this series discuss the requirements for supervision, how to plan for the trainee's learning and assessment, and how to provide relevant support.

The role of the supervisor is both rewarding and challenging. Supervisors of training (SOTs) are broadly responsible for anaesthesia training at each ANZCA accredited training site. They have a strong understanding of and experience in ANZCA activities. They oversee each trainee’s clinical performance and confirm progression of trainees through the various stages of the training program.

The college established a project group at the end of 2020 to undertake a needs analysis to consider and develop resources to assist new SOTs transition into the role. During 2021-22 the group developed a series of SOT induction modules covering the following topics:

  1. Understanding ANZCA training
  2. Overview of the Supervisor of Training role
  3. Navigating the training portfolio system
  4. Workplace based assessments for learning
  5. Effective documentation
  6. Trainee support process
  7. Responding to bullying, discrimination & sexual harassment

Modules in this series discuss the requirements for supervision, how to plan for the trainee's learning and assessment, and how to provide relevant support. These SOT induction modules are intended as a resource early in the role as well as an ongoing resource.

In addition, a review of current available SOT resources was undertaken and a single point of contact (one-stop-shop) support hub has been created to house all resources relevant to the SOT role.

Our project team's enormous efforts have made it possible to produce interactive modules and create the resources hub accommodating learning needs of SOTs. We will continue to support rural and remote anaesthetists through online delivery of these resources.
