Starting professional life as a veterinarian, the importance of Māori rights and Māori health led to Curtis retraining in human medicine. Training in Auckland, Waikato and Wellington, Curtis works as a nephrologist in Te Papaioea (Palmerston North), with special interests in equity of kidney healthcare, including kidney transplantation.
Outside of the hospital, Curtis serves on the board of the Māori Medical Practitioners Association (Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa). He was elected to the Medical Council in 2015, and became Chair of the Council in 2019.
