Clinical Director of Anaesthesia - Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS), Brisbane

Associate Professor David Sturgess is the Clinical Director of Anaesthesia at the newly commissioned Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) at Herston, Brisbane, Australia. He maintains specialist registration in general practice, anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. His doctoral thesis (UQ PhD) focused upon the non-invasive evaluation of heart function during life threatening infection. He maintains a keen interest in haemodynamic monitoring and echocardiography, as well as regular vascular anaesthesia.

Associate Professor Sturgess' expertise in perioperative care has allowed contributions through several avenues. He has contributed to Australian Healthcare Facility Guidelines (AusHFG), Safe Central Venous Access Checklist and Context Document (SWAPNET, Clinical Excellence Queensland) and ANZCA professional standards for the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. Collaboration across healthcare disciplines has allowed impact through perioperative medication management, perioperative nutrition and perioperative nursing and implementation science.
