Associate Professor Marc Russo founded Hunter Pain Specialists in 1999 as well as subsequently Hamilton Day Surgery, Hunter Specialist Medical Centre, Innervate Psychology and Genesis Research Services.

Dr Russo's vision was to provide a multidisciplinary approach to pain management and he developed Australia’s first private successful multidisciplinary pain management model. Using this approach with clinical diligence, early intervention, education and research in the field of pain management, he has treated over 50,000 patients to date and performed over 25,000 interventional pain procedures.

Dr Russo specialises in neuromodulation techniques and has completed three successful world first spinal cord stimulator device implantations in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, establishing him as a leader in his field. He has also conducted first-in-man pain and device studies. He treats patients with a wide range of interventional pain medicine approaches, including a combination of pharmacotherapy, psychology and systems approaches.

Dr Russo has a special interest and expertise in treating and researching complex regional pain syndrome. He has been a principal investigator of numerous clinical trials assessing new treatments for CRPS. He has conducted over 60 clinical trials in different treatment areas and has published over 60 papers in the field of pain medicine.

He is a conjoint associate professor at the school of biomedical sciences University of Newcastle where he holds the position as Clinical Lead in the Brain Neuromodulation Centre and Honorary Associate Professor, Dept Anaesthesiology, University of Hong Kong. He is deputy section editor of Pain Practice, Society Executive Advising Editor Pain medicine and Editorial Board Member Neuromodulation. He is the current President of the International Neuromodulation Society.
